Organic and handpicked Tamarind pods are collected from old trees around Mysore region of South India. In South Indian cuisine, Tamarind is used in Sambhar (curry) and Rasam preparations. It is also used in chutneys, candies and certain type of pickles.

Dhatu’s organic and handpicked tamarind is sourced directly from the farmers and is without any additives? They are manually de-seeded and processed in small batches. Tamarind pods are harvested just by shaking the branches, and then handpicked. They grow wild naturally and are organic in nature. Tamarind has a long shelf life and can stored for more than a year. Aged tamarind changed colour over a period of time. Fresh tamarind is brown in colour and it can turn to black over a period of time. Both, fresh and aged tamarind find their uses in kitchen and in Ayurveda for different purposes.

Tamarind derives its name from the Persian “tamar-I-hind,” meaning “date of India” !

Tamarind is rich in thiamine, iron and magnesium. It has high levels of tartaric acid which adds the zing to the taste buds! Other prominent nutrients include niacin, calcium, vitamin C, copper, and pyridoxine.

Root, body, fruit and leaves of tamarind plant boasts with rich nutritional value and  finds application in medicine in a big way. Tamarind also has industrial and economic importance. Tamarind is the most acidic fruit due to the presence of tartaric acid.  It can be sweet fruit as well, depending on its growing season. According to World Health Organization report, tamarind fruit is an ideal source of all essential amino acids!! (except for tryptophan). 

Tamarind is used traditionally in many countries. Ayurveda recommends tamarind for diabetes management and in urinary tract disorders. Other traditional medicine application of tamarind includes respiratory problems, abdominal pains and fever.
